Zircon is a spectacular though frequently misunderstood gemstone. Due to its name, it is often confused with cubic zirconia. Zircon is a rare natural gemstone, while cubic zirconia is a cheap, manmade stone.
Zircon has excellent fire and brilliance due to its high refractive index. This means it greatly resembles diamond. It is found in many earthy brown colours such as coppery brown, burnt orange and dusty pink. It is also frequently heat treated to produce very attractive white, yellow and blue stones.
It is a fairly hard gemstone that is suitable for all types of jewellery, though is best in earrings and pendants.
